Magnetic Compass Adjustment & Calibration

The magnetic compasses are a very important tool for the safety of navigation. Vessel owners and masters must ensure that magnetic compasses are maintained in good working order, adjusted and a table or curve of residual deviation is available.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority has issued Marine Notice No.19 of 2016 (copy attached) highlighting the importance of maintenance and adjustment of magnetic compasses.

We provide commercial ships, sailing yachts, motor yachts, tugs, fishing vessels, rescue boats, etc with the preceptive Compass Adjustment Certificate issued after proper adjustment or calibration process (if that is needed, sometimes compasses don't need adjustment!).

Also we can provide vessel compass with annual inspection certificate and arrange for repairs or replacement if required.

The main reason for compass adjustment and the issue of a new deviation table is an increase in deviations due to various reasons.

Inspections by the Port State Control, Vetting Inspectors and Flag State Audits can also create a requirement for compass calibration.
